…Where No Man Has Gone Before

Can I vent here for a second?

I’m a little taken aback at how many people I know are clambering to see the new Star Trek film. Let’s flashback to elementary school, where a young Clayton Flagg watched Trek religiously, built tricorders and phasers out of lego and brought them to school so he could play Star Trek with a small number of fellow geeks at lunch time.

The same Clayton who went as Data for Halloween, who built a model of the enterprise, collected Star Trek cards, and who actually owned The Starfleet Technical Manual.

And guess where this love for Trek got young Clayton Flagg in the vast social web of elementary and high school? Pretty much fucking nowhere. I was a loser. A geek. A nerd. And these were not cool things at the time, like it is now (for some reason). No, I was banished from all things cool because I was a Trekkie.

Now… JJ Abrams makes a flashy Trek movie and all those jocks and punks who pushed me around many years ago, are standing in line for the midnight screening. And all I have to say is…

Fascinating, and very illogical.

Oh boy…. my love for Star Trek was all thanks to my dad, who was was . I even went dressed up as Uhura one year, third grade I think. I was born into a trekkie family. It’s such a strange thing to see non-trekkies seeing this but some people said it’s not just for us anymore. I doubt they, those jocks and punks, would know what half of those things they are talking about.

And to top it off? JJ Abrams wasn’t even a fan of Star Trek. Lame. But still I anticipate this movie.

“This isn’t your father’s Star Trek”
It’s the new age yuppie’s Star Trek. And they’ll have no fucking clue what’s going on.
